Severe Weather and Going to Class

Severe weather is possible any time of year, especially during the winter. Though Ball State University has not had to deal with a potential campus closure yet this semester, we want to take this opportunity to inform you of our policies and procedures as they relate to weather closures or delays.

You should always assume the university is open for regularly scheduled classes and business unless there has been a notice of campus closure or cancellation of classes. In the rare event winter weather leads to a campus closure or a cancellation of classes for all or part of the day, the university will notify you through the following channels:
  • bsu.edu: The university website is the official source for information about campus closures and class cancellation. It is updated as soon as new information becomes available.
  • Emergency text messaging: Subscribe now.
  • Twitter @ballstate_alert
  • email to Ball State accounts
  • local media: The Star Press, The Daily News, WBST-FM 92.1, WLBC-FM 104.1
  • Indianapolis TV stations (Note: The amount of information that can be publicized on TV stations is extremely limited. The best place to get complete information is via university-controlled media such as text messages, @ballstate_alert, email, and bsu.edu.)
Students are reminded to check their course syllabi for instructions about make up work to be completed due to the cancellation of classes. Faculty can either inform students about make up work through Blackboard or by other means such as emails to students.

Prepare and Stay Safe

Now is also a good time to remember the steps you can take to ensure you are prepared to travel and stay safe in cold and snowy weather.
  • Monitor weather forecasts when temperatures fall below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • If you are away from campus, monitor weather forecasts and consider returning before a forecasted storm.
  • Refer to preparedness websites such as ready.gov and take appropriate actions to keep yourself safe. This is especially important for off-campus students who might be responsible for a house for the first time.
  • Make sure you are subscribed to our emergency text messaging at bsu.edu/emergencytext and follow our updates on Twitter, @ballstate_alert.
  • Come to campus prepared for cold weather with appropriate apparel and footwear.
  • Plan extra time to get to class and be aware of your surroundings while traversing campus.
